Damp, Condensation & Moisture Problems Properly Diagnosed
Don’t guess. Identify the cause before treating the symptoms.

What Are Tide Marks on Walls?
Tide marks on walls are a common sign of moisture within a property and are often associated with rising damp. They typically appear as horizontal staining on internal walls and can indicate that moisture is travelling through the structure.

What Causes Tide Marks
Tide marks are caused by moisture rising through porous materials such as brick and plaster. As water moves upward, it carries salts from the ground, which are left behind as the moisture evaporates, creating visible staining on the wall surface.
Common Signs
-
Horizontal staining on lower sections of walls
-
White salt deposits (efflorescence)
-
Peeling paint or damaged plaster
-
Deterioration of skirting boards
Not all tide marks are caused by true rising damp. Similar staining can also occur from other sources of moisture, which is why accurate diagnosis is essential before any treatment is undertaken.
Understanding how rising damp is identified is important when diagnosing moisture issues. You can learn more in our rising damp guide.
A professional inspection ensures that the source of moisture is correctly identified and that any remedial work is appropriate to the property.
